Why a Big Update?

There are a variety of reasons you might need a major update of your home inventory catalog, even if you've had yearly "checkups."

Reasons may include:

• Moving
  Possessions are often purged during a move.
• Pre-Divorce
  It is difficult to divide assets without thorough documentation.  An accountant takes a financial inventory; a home inventory specialist should take a home inventory.
  
• Post Divorce
  In the emotional aftermath of divorce, it is easy to lose track of who got what. 
  
• Remarriage/Combining Households
  Obviously, this is going to create a major change in your home inventory!  In the event of a loss, you would be even more confused than usual over what is absent.
• Death in Household
  Whether due to disbursing of legacies from a will or downsizing your dearly departed's earthly possessions, this can represent a major change in your home inventory.
• Inheritance
  Perhaps the dearly departed didn't live with you, but provided for you in their will.  If you were their primary heir, that could be a significant addition to your home inventory! 
  
• Growing Family
  Your cozy dwelling for two will now be accommodating a small third person (or fourth or fifth). Those little ones come with a lot of expensive gear! 
  
• Downsizing/Empty Nest
  Your last child has finished college and established their own home.  You have gently invited each child to remove their stuff from your house.  What remains?  This is often a good time to reevaluate the majority of your home inventory contents.  Do you really still need the crib in the attic?
